Taking Gold from Kuwait to India: Duty-Free Allowance 2026

So last August I landed in Calicut at 2am, dead tired. My wife’s wearing 42 g of bangles—we bought them in Mubarakiya for our niece. The customs guy just looks and asks, “Kitna saal Kuwait?” I say, “Nine years. He just nods. Gone, no duty.

At the same airport, three months earlier, my friend Sameer—poor guy—gets hit with a 38k fine for 25g. Why? He stuffed it in his laptop bag: no bill, no declaration. tried to be smart.

Rules changed in Feb 2026, and half of Kuwait still doesn’t know. Here’s the real deal.

Duty-free gold allowance from Kuwait to India in 2026 showing customs limits for NRIs

What actually changed?

India finally removed that stupid ₹50k/₹1 lakh value thing. You know—20g for men, but only if under 50k? With gold at 10k per gram, it’s impossible.

Now it’s just weight. That’s it.

They said it straight—India’s 2026 baggage rules allow duty-free gold up to 40 g for women or 20 g for others, and the old value caps are gone.

The budget also confirmed the removal of the Rs100,000 value cap, 40g for women, and 20g for men for free.

And again—no value limits now, just weight.

means my wife can wear 40 g worth 4 lakh, still free. before they’d fight you on price.

How much can we bring from Kuwait?

simple:

– men: 20g jewellery

– women: 40g jewellery

– kids: same if they’ve been here 6 months

– you must have lived abroad 6 months—that’s the catch

It’s all weight now, not value. and they made it clear—40g female, 20g others.

why Kuwait is better than dubai

Dubai has a 5% VAT. Kuwait has zero. Plus, Kuwait banned cash for gold last year, so every shop gives you a card receipt with your name. Indian customs LOVE that paper.

I always go Thursday night to Mubarakiya, the same shop near Gate 3. Tell him, “English Bill, put your passport number.” Pay by KNET. Keep the SMS. Done.

how i do it—3 steps

  1. Buy bangles, not coins

coins = problem. They call it bullion. Jewelry = bangles and chains. I buy 22k bangles because my wife can wear them; they look normal.

  1. wear it

Don’t pack, ever. My wife wears a 38g; I wear an 18g chain. Customs sees personal use, not business. If it’s in a suitcase, they think you’re selling.

  1. atithi app

new rule—you HAVE to declare on the phone. atithi app, 4 mins. Put “38 g of personal jewelry in Kuwait.” “You get a QR code. Show it at the green channel. They wave to you.

India made digital declaration mandatory now. Sameer didn’t do it—fine. I do it every time—never stopped.

What if you need more for the wedding?

You’ll pay duty on extras—about 15% + 3% GST. still cheaper than India because Kuwaiti gold is already 12-15% less.

or use family. Last December we did: me 20g, wife 40g, son 20g, daughter 35g = 115g total. All worn, all declared, zero duty. Kids are allowed the same limit if they are 6 months abroad.

Carry birth certificates; sometimes they ask.

3 dumb mistakes

  1. Biscuits—don’t. Different rule.
  2. No proof of stay—keep old passport or Sahel app screenshot showing 6+ months. I got asked once in Kannur.
  3. hiding in a bag—wear it. Hiding is smuggling in their eyes.

that ₹75,000 thing?

That’s for phones and perfume, not gold. For gold it’s just weight now. And that’s the win—they removed the value cap after NRIs complained. Gulf News called it people-focused reform.

My checklist

– bangles, not coin

– 20/40g per person

– 6 months Kuwait proof

– Kuwait bill with passport

– knet screenshot

– atithi QR

– wear it

– kids’ birth certificates

Do that. Calicut, Cochin, and Trivandrum are all the same—5 mins out.

Last year 40 g cost me 1,440 KD in Kuwait (~3.84 lakh). The same in Kerala: 4.42 lakh. Saved 58k, no duty because it’s exactly 40g.
